In many instances a casualty’s condition will deteriorate rapidly without the intervention of a salvor. Instant response is essential. This requires mobilising and deploying experienced salvage personnel and specialised equipment including pumps, generators, firefighting systems, anti-pollution boom and other vital items. Speed is of the essence and helicopters often play a pivotal role in transporting the salvage team and essential equipment to the casualty.

In 1978, the ISU commenced an Annual Statistical Survey which includes over 6,000 salvage operations. Every year on average, whilst engaged on LOF contracts, ISU salvors recover property valued in excess of US$1 billion.
